ASQ Annual Quality Congress
May 20, 2003 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

AGENDA
- Review research program background – Bob King
- Brainstorm research design – Participants
- Next Steps – Bob King

QUESTIONS AND KEY IDEAS
- Will management (leadership) be addressed? Will companies participate if it is not addressed? Need to partner with leaders.

Healthcare
- Benchmark systems internationally to identify best practice (techniques and values).
- Address geriatrics/preventing age related diseases.
- Need to include payers as part of the research solutions (especially chronic disease prevention).
- How do communities address the uninsured population?
- Current system is designed to address incidents, not chronic disease – not prevention focused.
- There is no standardization of procedures among providers.
- Focus on the human behavior aspect of healthcare.
- How does alternative medicine fit into our improvement goals?
- There is no patient advocate managing the entire health "care" process (patients are on their own to coordinate care among their providers).
- How do we get providers to understand they are no different from other industries? What are the differences, if any?
- Need to address cultural and sociological issues in order to positively impact the healthcare system.
-Employees of healthcare providers may not understand the "vision" of providing quality health care.

NEXT STEPS
- Meeting Minutes will be placed on the website under the Research Committee site.
- Discussion questions will be made available on the website for further program design definition.
